Music foundation aims to offset band program related costs.
The Cary Kids Music Foundation, a non-for-profit organization dedicated to helping District 26 students who wish to participate in the band program, is offering merit-based scholarships. Interested students can apply for a scholarship by submitting a one to three paragraph essay describing how important music is to them and why they feel they deserve the award. Students can submit all essays to CaryKidsMusicFoundation.com/essays or send to PO Box 383 Cary, Il 60013. The district's "thinking outside box" may lead to lower classes sizes, pending approval.
In efforts to restore low class sizes, Cary School District 26 is planning to hire five teachers for the coming school year. The state has made good on one of their $550,000 categorical payments, which will be used to fund the remaining 2004 alternative revenue source bond payments. Auditors agreed that the district could fully fund remaining payments making committed revenue available to use to accelerate the reduction of class size. With a proposed purchase of copiers, the annual lease would be eliminated and will provide additional funding for more class size reduction. Two Trinity Oaks Christian Academy students earned the gold level and highest point total at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science fair.
Jonathan March and Shannon Morrison competed along with 1,100 students from across the state at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science fair on Saturday, May 5. March, who's a seventh grader, was awarded the highest level of gold for his project on the affect of temperature on solar panels. Morrison, who's an eight-grader received the highest point total awarding her best in category for seventh and eighth grade students in Microbiology for her project on the resistance of E. Coli bacteria to chemical and non-chemical based household cleaners.

College is hosting the ceremony Saturday, May 12.
McHenry County College is graduating 655 students this weekend during its commencement ceremony, including its first grads of the college’s new Culinary Arts program. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 12 at MCC. MCC is awarding 250 degrees and 405 certificates, according to a press release. Jesica Carbajal of Hebron has been selected as the student speaker for the commencement ceremony. She will graduate with an Associate in Arts degree. Also speaking will be MCC president Vicky Smith, Ed.D. MCC students get a chance to work a rotation at Pioneer.
Every fall nursing students from McHenry County College’s Nursing Program participate in a rotation at Pioneer Center for Human Services. Pioneer Center nurses mentor the students for the one-day rotation working with individuals with developmental disabilities. Throughout the day, staff nurses educate and guide students through a client’s health assessments to determine which treatments and services could be added to allow them to reach their full wellness potential. “We foster the student’s communication and interaction with our individuals who may have deficits in verbal skills or social anxiety,” said Sarah Walker, Nurse Manager for Pioneer Center. The Friends of McHenry County College Foundation is offering 36 different scholarships for current and future MCC students who plan to enroll for the Fall 2012 semester. Scholarships vary in amount and type of award and include those based on need, merit and/or program of study. Ready for the Supermoon and the Eta Aquarid meteor shower this weekend?
Should the skies clear Saturday night, the moon we'll see will appear super large and super close. It'll be what's called a "Supermoon," where the moon is at perigee — its closest approach to Earth, according to The Washington Post. The moon will be just 221,802 miles away from us and will look like it's 16 percent brighter than a typical full moon, The Washington Post reports. So what's the best time to see this Supermoon? "Acting Up: A Performance Jam" will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 3 and May 4.
The original scripts of Lake in the Hills resident Lauryn Lugo will be showcased during "Acting Up: A Performance Jam" this Thursday and Friday.
